YSI
We are passionate about young people. We are passionate about education. And we are passionate about the world we live in. We know that the world is not always fair, not always equal and not always just. We also know that young people can be powerful catalysts for social change when given opportunities and supports.
That is exactly what we do.
We meet once a week, every Friday first period and we discuss our ideas to contribute to homelessness. Our project‘s name is Daoni gan didean.

Peter McVerry talk
On Wednesday 15th of November, all YSI students had the first talk about the project that we are working on this year, homelessness. This idea came out because Ireland is one of the countries with such a big number of people without a house so we thought that it might be a good idea to do something about it.
The speaker was Francis Doherty from Peter McVerry, and he explained to us the different activities that they do to help these people, but he also taught us a very important value, “to be homeless is an adjective, all of that people are a person first”, we sometimes don’t think about how lucky we are having a house, a family, everything that we need and more.
I think this talk was inspiring and very useful. It gave us another point of view about this topic and how we should work in it.

Carol singing
On the 21st of December, all the TY students involved in YSI went to St Stephens shopping centre to do carol singing for charity for two hours. We got 420€ and the money went to Peter McVerry trust. It was such a nice thing to do especially around Christmas time because it’s when homeless people need our help the most.
Everyone had a good time and did something that definitely will make a difference in people’s lives this Christmas.

Bazar and YSI bake sale
On the 14th of December, St.Gerards held the annual Christmas Bazaar. The whole school was filled with festive treats and activities for all age groups. TY students made it their mission to give all efforts to the YSI Cake Sale located in the upstairs corridors, for three hours we were selling different cakes some of them made by ourselves. All proceeds went to Tiglin, the charity dealing with the issue of homelessness and substance abuse, we chose this charity as we received support from them to start our project and we had different talks with them. This year the winners of the bookmark competition were two TY students, Ella Malone and Sarah Murphy, they could watch all their hard work pay off as their design was printed and sold by Ms.Fox.
The atmosphere was really good and the teachers also took part in it, M Drummy was in the auction room where the sixth years were helping. The bazar was organized by the fifth years and they also were involved in different activities.
To sum up, the bazar was a success and we all went home very satisfied as we got an amount of 400 € from our bake sale, something that definitely made a difference in many people’s Christmas.

Dignity Bags
This years project is homeless and for it we decided to do dignity bags for Christmas time. The Jade behind it is to give back to people their dignity because homeless is just the adjective that goes with the person they are people first.
To start this project we had people from Tiglin coming in to talk about this global problem. We did it all ourselves with our teachers help and made up a list for the different years to bring in stuff for it. We made 80 dignity bags and we got the chance to deliver some of them.
In general was an amazing experience and I couldn’t have been more proud with the result that we got.

YSI Speakout
The 22nd of March most of the YSI group went to Dun laoghaire for the annual YSI speakout. We were around 20 schools and some of them were very impressive. We didn’t have much time to rehearse but we decided to represent two different point of views that people might have about homeless people’s and we also included the names of the different charities we worked with.
Everyone found it very entertaining and we got to see other problems and solutions for them. We were very happy with our project and it’s a great initiative for students to discover more about their own community and ways to help them.
